Job Title: Geotechnical Group Manager

Overview:
This person directs activities of group and manages large complex projects, exercises independent judgement on technical matters; assumes responsibility in the name of the Firm for professional quality of work performed by his/her group. They staff the group and motivate it to contribute to Firm goals and professional growth. The individual increases the group‘s market share and expands into new areas. They are responsible for profitability of projects assigned to the group and achieving goals of the group, including: increasing business, profitability, adherence to budgets, collection of accounts receivable, and employee relations.
Job Responsibilities:

- May interface with prospective clients, usually in conjunction with the Business Development Group to discuss technical needs, business prospects, and/or proposals and contracts.
- Reviews proposals and fee estimates.
- Is responsible for general direction of difficult and complex assignments under control of Project Managers as assigned to the group.
- Reviews unusual technical reports and is responsible for the quality of reports prepared by subordinates assigned to their group.
- Reviews staffing requirements and project schedules so that project requirements are met in an organized, consistent and planned manner within the allotted time and budget.
- Is considered to be fully-qualified to exercise independent judgement in technical matters and to perform assignments requiring mature experience and judgement, including litigation, mediation, or arbitration.
- May sign reports as a fully-qualified professional on behalf of the Firm. This duty is generally delegated to Project Managers.
- May maintain a close relationship with a client, which includes advising on such matters as project progress, compliance with the scope of services, technical aspects, budget status, report schedule, etc. May be responsible for maintaining and developing specific clients.
- Projects a positive image of the Firm and colleagues at client negotiations, conferences, technical meetings, and within the office.
- Responsible for work assigned to the group regarding professional liability and contractual obligations. Practices and indoctrinates subordinates in loss prevention techniques.
- May assist Branch Manager or Business Development Group with technical business development presentations.
- Signs standard Firm contract terms.
- Reviews work within his/her group and provides general oversight as to technical and administrative matters.
- Responsible for recognizing and making recommendations for equipment and/or procedures or staff training.
- Responsible for profitability of group and adherence to group budgets and utilization goals. In conjunction with the Project Managers, is responsible for budget control on projects.
- Keeps abreast of new technical, regulatory, and business issues, as well as developments with the profession through literature review, attendance at meetings and conferences.
- Attends loss prevention courses.
- Attends management training courses available.
- Motivates and trains less-experienced professionals by guidance and instruction in technical and administrative aspects of technical discipline and consulting.
- Attends regularly-scheduled staff meetings to receive company information, review job progress, and coordinate office groups.
- Progress of group work is checked at staff meetings for adherence to time, costs, problems encountered and personnel scheduling.
Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Science required. Master’s degree in specialty desirable.
- At least ten years of progressively responsible experience in the technical field of choice.
- Five years of supervisory responsibilities, including three years at project or program management level.
- A minimum of five to six years of the above basic experience may be substituted by comparable experience in a closely-related field.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer or equivalent in specialty field or demonstrated expertise in specialty or project management field.
