Position: Experienced Product Designer – VA Clinical Decision Support
We’re seeking an experienced Product Designer with strong execution skills to join our team supporting a suite of products in the VA Clinical Decision Support space. The ideal candidate will collaborate with dedicated engineering and research peers to craft customized solutions and expand components within the existing VA Design System, addressing the unique needs of clinicians across VA health environments.

Key Qualifications
Required:

• 6+ years of experience in product design, web, interaction design, or similar roles.
• Proven expertise in creating high-quality designs using tools and methodologies such as:
  • Design systems, atomic/component-based design, and responsive layouts.
  • Annotated wireframes, clickable prototypes, branded UI designs, microcopy, and style guides.
• Experience collaborating with researchers to lead and support usability testing through low- and high-fidelity prototypes or live systems.
• Ability to synthesize usability research insights into actionable design recommendations.
• 2+ years of project team leadership experience.
• 2+ years of experience facilitating product design workshops or presenting to clients, ideally in a consulting capacity.
• Eligibility to obtain a government security clearance and access classified information related to specific projects.

Preferred (Nice-to-Have):

• 2+ years of experience working remotely or as a remote freelancer.
• 2+ years of consulting experience, particularly in a professional services or government context.
• Familiarity with cross-matrixed environments and the United States Web Design System (USWDS) or VA Design System.
• Experience conducting remote usability research, workshops, or validation sessions.

Primary Responsibilities

• Strategic Design & Collaboration:
  • Scope and plan design needs for projects with undefined or ambiguous parameters.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to develop product design principles, strategies, roadmaps, and success metrics aligned with client goals.
  • Partner with other designers to ensure deliverables are inclusive, accessible, and written in plain language.
• Execution & Deliverables:
  • Deliver high-quality design outputs, including design systems, prototypes, wireframes, UI designs, and supporting documentation from kickoff to handoff.
  • Plan and execute user research and usability testing with low- and high-fidelity prototypes or live systems.
  • Synthesize research findings into actionable design decisions.
• Leadership & Facilitation:
  • Lead meetings, workshops, and training sessions for clients, stakeholders, and internal teams.
  • Coach junior team members in problem-solving techniques and user-centered design principles.
  • Present work effectively in various forums to diverse audiences.
• Problem-Solving & Innovation:
  • Analyze and resolve complex challenges by balancing business requirements with user needs.
  • Proactively navigate project and organizational ambiguity to deliver exceptional outcomes.
