Title: Satellite Engineer

Basic Purpose:
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in networking and will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining complex network infrastructures supporting satellite connectivity. This will involve working with a variety of networking technologies, including routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, and SD-WAN appliances, to ensure secure, efficient, and scalable satellite connectivity across all our vessels and islands.
You will also be responsible for troubleshooting and resolving network issues affecting satellite connectivity as they arise, working closely with other members of the IT team to ensure that our satellite infrastructure is always running smoothly. This will require a deep understanding of networking protocols, technologies, and security best practices.
In addition to your technical responsibilities, you will also be expected to provide technical expertise and support to other teams within the organization. This may involve collaborating with internal clients and stakeholders, and other IT professionals.
As a Level 3 Network Engineer, you will be expected to create and maintain network documentation and diagrams to ensure that our satellite infrastructure is well-documented and easy to understand. You will also participate in on-call rotation and provide 24/7 support when required, so you should be comfortable working in a high-pressure environment and be able to respond quickly to urgent network issues.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement complex satellite and network infrastructures.
  • Act as the technical liaison between Satellite providers and NCLH internal teams on project planning, new deployments, and incident resolution.
  • Provide Tier 3 support on technical issues affecting the Satellite Services for vessels and islands.
  • Function as point of escalation for the NCLH NOC and NCLH network teams on any Satellite related issues.
  • Initiate timely technical and management escalation as required. Utilize discretion and knowledge of best practices to effectively communicate severity of outages to necessary parties.
  • Ensure network security and compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Create and maintain network documentation and diagrams.
  • Participate in on-call rotation and provide 24/7 support when required.
  • Continuously evaluate and recommend improvements to satellite and network infrastructure.
  • Provide technical expertise in project planning, assessing multiple factors, including best practices, vendor specifications, bandwidth allocation and security requirements.
  • Create and maintain reports reflecting user consumption, performance, and guest experience, which will be delivered to the leadership team regularly.
  • Document all the processes (SOP’s) and keep them updated.

 

Specific Tasks:

  • Design, plan, and execution of SD-WAN connectivity and monitoring, including the deployment of all appliances across the fleet.
  • Design, plan, and execution of Network devices to support the Starlink connectivity across the fleet.
  • Incident troubleshooting and problem management for Satellite Services (Network, VSAT, LEO and SD-WAN).
  • Performance analysis and continuous improvement of the Satellite Network (Network, VSAT, LEO and SD-WAN).
  • Peer with providers and vendors for continuous optimization of the SD-WAN configuration.
  • Orchestrate and execute operational changes to support the stability and high performance of the Satellite environment.
  • Translate business needs into system concepts by partnering with various departments within NCLH.
  • Ensure satellite provider Service Level Agreements (SLA) are met and remain in compliance.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring and support to system managers and other IT staff as required.

Qualifications:

  • Technical knowledge of satellite hardware and applications.
  • Experience with bandwidth optimization software and hardware.
  • Knowledge of network connectivity and switching technologies.
  • Mid-level knowledge and understanding of IP routing protocols (RIP, EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, IS-IS).
  • Knowledge of satellite and wireless communications.
  • Ability to read, write and understand technical manuals, procedural documentation, and original equipment manufacturer guides, within reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to explain technical subjects to a non-technical audience.
  • Ability to work well in a team-based environment and independently.
  • Good organizational skills to prioritize multiple tasks and demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Working conditions typically include climate-controlled office environment or potential extreme environments including heat and cold temperatures.
  • Experience with network monitoring and analysis tools
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Position entails frequent bending, climbing, crouching, and stooping.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and lift/install potentially heavy hardware equipment, within reasonable accommodation.

 

Education:

Bachelors in telecommunications, information technology or engineering or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Experience:

5+ years’ experience in Satellite and/or Network industry. Experience in satellite deployment, operation and support is desired. Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) Certification and/or equivalent experience is required.
