Job Title: Systems Operations and Modernization Engineer
Job Type: Contract

Role Summary
This role is responsible for the end-to-end ownership, stabilization, and modernization of a portfolio of time?critical, mission?critical systems and services. The position combines deep legacy platform expertise with modern cloud, automation, and integration skills. The individual will ensure operational continuity while leading the transition from legacy applications to modern SaaS, cloud services, and standard enterprise tools.
A key focus of the role is risk reduction, improved reliability, and the creation of sustainable operational models through documentation, monitoring, modernization, and knowledge transfer.
Key Objectives
- Own and stabilize a portfolio of critical systems and services
- Improve reliability, recoverability, monitoring, and support processes for time?sensitive services
- Lead technical modernization efforts to migrate legacy platforms to modern SaaS and cloud solutions
- Reduce operational and single?expert dependency risk
- Enable long-term sustainability through documentation, playbooks, and team knowledge transfer
Primary Responsibilities
Operational Ownership & Service Stability
- Provide end?to?end operational ownership for legacy applications, automation workflows, integrations, and cloud?hosted components
- Ensure availability, performance, and timely issue resolution for all systems
- Maintain data retrieval, processing, storage, and customer?facing delivery workflows
- Operate and enhance internal and external portals, including user and access management
- Maintain and improve automated data ingestion, processing, and scheduling pipelines
Integrations, Infrastructure & Security
- Manage inbound and outbound integrations including email and SFTP
- Configure and support secure data exchanges, encryption, and cipher updates
- Manage virtual machines, storage, firewalls, gateways, web hosting, file shares, and certificates
- Maintain access controls and application?level security models
- Proactively manage infrastructure changes and access updates
Modernization & Transformation
Assessment & Roadmap Development
- Analyze legacy applications, infrastructure, integrations, and workflows
- Document dependencies, security models, operational pain points, and risks
- Define target?state architecture using modern SaaS platforms, cloud services, and standard tools
- Develop a phased migration roadmap prioritizing high?risk and time?critical services
Legacy Migration & Integration Modernization
- Design and implement approaches to offload legacy functionality into modern components
- Preserve critical business rules and workflows during migration
- Implement modern data ingestion, integration, and automation patterns
- Reduce dependency on legacy platforms and standalone servers
Tooling Modernization & Pilots
- Evaluate modern or open?source tools to improve operational workflows
- Implement pilot migrations with dual?run, validation, and rollback strategies
- Ensure modernization efforts do not introduce new operational risk
Documentation & Knowledge Transfer
- Produce design documentation, migration guides, and support runbooks
- Deliver knowledge transfer and training to enable long?term team ownership
- Ensure modernized systems are supportable beyond the engagement
Required Skills & Experience
Core Technical Skills
- Proficient experience with HCL Domino (v8 or higher) including application development, administration, and support
- Strong knowledge of LotusScript, Formula Language, and the Domino Object Model
- Experience with Domino web technologies (e.g., xPages, web forms, CSS)
- Solid understanding of Domino security models, including ACLs, Authors/Readers fields, and access troubleshooting
- Experience supporting time?critical, operationally sensitive systems
Automation, Scripting & Data
- Mid?level proficiency in Python and C#
- Basic scripting skills in PowerShell and JavaScript
- Experience with web scraping, XML, and automated data pipelines
- Experience with scheduling tools such as Windows Task Scheduler
Infrastructure, Integration & Cloud
- Broad, mid?level experience with Windows?based hosting environments, including VMs, file shares, backups, and patching
- Experience with networking and security components such as firewalls, gateways, and secure integrations
- Hands?on experience configuring SSL/HTTPS and maintaining certificates
- Experience with SFTP and email?based integrations
- Comfortable working with cloud services, with the ability to self?learn and troubleshoot using documentation and resources
Tooling & Operations
- Working knowledge of text and comparison tools such as Notepad++ or equivalent
Preferred Experience
- Experience working with highly regulated, safety?critical, or operationally sensitive systems
- Prior exposure to domain?specific, structured operational data sets
- Experience supporting customer?facing, time?sensitive services
Soft Skills & Working Style
