GIS Analyst – Testing & Quality Assurance
Remote | Contract
We are hiring a GIS Analyst with strong testing experience for a well-known enterprise utility client. This is a remote contract role focused on quality assurance and program-level testing of GIS systems and workflows in a large-scale utility environment.
If you have hands-on ESRI experience and know how to validate complex GIS data, integrations, and workflows end to end, this is worth a look.
What You Will Do
• Execute program-level testing of GIS systems, workflows, and integrations across the enterprise
• Develop and maintain test plans, test cases, and defect documentation for GIS applications
• Perform system integration testing, regression testing, and user acceptance testing (UAT) across ESRI platforms and connected systems
• Validate GIS data integrity, spatial accuracy, and consistency across enterprise geodatabases
• Collaborate with GIS developers, business analysts, and operational stakeholders to identify and resolve defects
• Support testing of integrations between ArcGIS and enterprise asset management or ERP systems
• Document test results and communicate findings clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
What You Bring
• 5+ years of GIS experience in a utility or enterprise environment
• Hands-on experience with ESRI platforms including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, and ArcGIS Online
• Demonstrated experience with GIS testing, QA, or data validation in a program or systems context
• Familiarity with ArcGIS Utility Network or Geometric Network
• Experience with enterprise geodatabase management and spatial data integrity validation
• Strong understanding of GIS data models, feature classes, and topology
• Ability to write and execute structured test cases and document defects clearly
• Experience working in Agile or structured SDLC delivery environments
Bonus Points
• Experience testing GIS integrations with SAP, Maximo, or similar enterprise asset management systems
• Python scripting experience with arcpy
• Familiarity with ArcGIS Pipeline Referencing or electric utility network models
• Background in electric or gas utility operations
• ESRI certification
Job Title: Esri Utility Network Testing SME
Location: Fully remote and no travel
Duration: 1+ year contract
About the Role
We are supporting a major GIS migration program moving an electric utility’s network data from a legacy platform (SmallWorld) to Esri ArcGIS Utility Network (UN). This is the electric phase of a broader migration effort, following an earlier, smaller-scope gas migration, and carries significantly more data volume, jurisdictional complexity, and scale.
The program spans these workstreams: core solutions build, integrations, data products, a GIS data lake, change management, training, and testing.
The build is currently mid-progress, with formal testing not yet underway. We are looking for 1-2 Esri/Utility Network SMEs to support test script writing, testing readiness, and early testing coordination ahead of the first structured testing phase.
Technical Environment
• Target environment: ArcGIS Enterprise 11.5 with Utility Network Version 7 (UN7)
• Current baseline is transitioning from ArcGIS Enterprise 11.1 and Utility Network Version 6 (UN6) up to UN7; familiarity with UN6 is helpful for candidates who are close to UN7-ready
• Additional stack components include ArcGIS Pro (various dot releases) and other add-on tools tied to the upgrade; useful but not required: Schneider electric session manager and SBS playbook manager
Key Responsibilities
• Co-author test scripts and advise on correct script design based on business requirements (hundreds of scripts expected across the program)
• Capture and record test scripts, translating functional requirements into clear, testable scenarios
• Support test execution coordination, reproduce and triage defects, and validate fixes end-to-end
• Act as an embedded SME alongside business teams, guiding scripting standards and testing approach
• Supplement a larger testing team, partnering closely with business owners and testers rather than authoring every script solo
• Support a large-scale data migration effort, converting legacy network data into the Utility Network schema across multiple jurisdictions
Required Experience
• 5+ years of relevant Esri/Utility Network experience; 5-7 years strongly preferred given how recently Utility Network has been adopted across the utility industry
• Core Esri skills, including working knowledge of ArcGIS Pro as an editor
• Strong understanding of Electric Utility Network concepts; experience with UN6 and/or UN7 database
• Prior experience as a testing lead or test manager, with background in end-to-end testing frameworks, script generation, and defect workflows
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to sit alongside business teams, translate technical concepts into functional terms, and guide non-technical users through test design
Logistics
• Remote-first; no relocation/ travel required.
• Engagement length: 6-12 months minimum, with strong potential to extend beyond 12 months as the program continues into 2027
