Senior Platform Engineer
Location: Charlotte, NC (Hybrid – 2–3 days per week onsite)
Type: Contract or Contract-to-Hire
Most infrastructure roles ask you to support existing systems. This one asks you to improve them.
We’re conducting a search for a Senior Platform Engineer who will become the technical right hand to the team’s manager.
This team owns AWS infrastructure, platform operations, CI/CD automation, Azure DevOps pipelines, and operational engineering. They’re looking for an engineer who doesn’t simply respond to alerts—they investigate root causes, eliminate recurring problems, and continuously improve the environment through automation and engineering discipline.

What You’ll Own
- Take ownership of a large AWS and Windows-based production platform supporting critical business operations
- Design, build, and enhance infrastructure automation using PowerShell, CloudFormation, AWS Systems Manager (SSM), and Infrastructure-as-Code best practices
- Manage and improve Azure DevOps repositories, work tracking, deployment pipelines, and CI/CD processes
- Troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues across cloud services, operating systems, applications, networking, and automation workflows
- Identify and eliminate recurring operational issues through root-cause analysis rather than manual workarounds
- Improve platform monitoring, observability, and operational visibility using AWS-native monitoring tools
- Support and optimize Windows Server, IIS, SQL Server, and AWS environments from an infrastructure perspective
- Support platform security initiatives, including vulnerability remediation, audit logging, certificate management, encryption controls, and operational governance
- Assist with business continuity, backup, disaster recovery, and operational resiliency initiatives
- Drive automation projects that reduce manual effort and improve platform stability
- Monitor cloud resource utilization and identify opportunities for operational and cost efficiencies
- Partner with development and infrastructure teams to improve operational excellence and platform reliability
- Serve as a trusted technical resource capable of influencing architecture decisions and guiding platform improvements

This team operates much more like a Platform Operations organization than a traditional software engineering or DevOps team. Success is measured by platform reliability, operational improvements, automation, and ownership—not simply ticket volume.
What We’re Looking For
Must-Haves
- Strong AWS infrastructure experience supporting enterprise production environments
- Deep Windows Server administration expertise
- Advanced PowerShell scripting and automation experience
- Hands-on CloudFormation experience
- Experience leveraging AWS Systems Manager (SSM) for automation and orchestration
- Experience supporting and administering IIS
- Working knowledge of SQL Server infrastructure support (not DBA-focused)
- Experience with Azure DevOps (ADO) including repositories, pipelines, and CI/CD workflows
- Strong understanding of DNS, networking, and infrastructure fundamentals
- Experience troubleshooting logs, services, deployments, and platform issues across multiple systems
- Demonstrated track record of ownership, initiative, and operational excellence
Nice to Have
- Experience with AWS CDK
- Python scripting experience
- Experience with AWS-native services such as:
- Lambda
- DynamoDB
- API Gateway
- Prior experience serving as a technical lead, senior engineer, or escalation point
- Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments
- Experience supporting enterprise-scale cloud operations

Ownership Is the Differentiator
Technical skills will get a candidate through the interview process, but ownership is what earns the job.
We’re looking for an engineer who:
- Takes ownership of problems and drives them to resolution
- Questions recurring operational issues instead of accepting them as normal
- Understands how infrastructure works beneath the surface
- Can trace issues through scripts, logs, services, and network dependencies
- Has a strong bias toward action
- Accepts feedback and collaborates well with teammates
- Improves systems instead of repeatedly performing manual work
- Challenges outdated processes respectfully and constructively
A simple example:
If a service requires a manual restart after every monthly patch cycle, the expectation isn’t to document the restart process—the expectation is to determine why the restart is necessary and eliminate the underlying problem.
Technical fundamentals outweigh certifications. Curiosity outweighs buzzwords. Engineers who can explain why their solutions work will stand out.

This role is unlikely to be a fit for candidates who are primarily:
- Application developers
- Software engineers focused mainly on writing applications
- Kubernetes-only engineers
- Site Reliability Engineers focused primarily on alert monitoring
- Pure DevOps engineers with limited Windows infrastructure experience
- Engineers who rely on AI-generated code without understanding the underlying technology
- Individuals who ignore team standards and established processes
