About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Enterprise Cloud Engineer to help design, build, secure, and operate VUMC’s cloud environments—primarily AWS, with GCP as a secondary platform. In this role, you’ll provide technical leadership across cloud engineering and operations, enable application teams through automation and self-service, and help establish standards that improve security, reliability, and scalability.

You’ll work closely with engineering and application teams to support both cloud migrations and new cloud-native development, while promoting consistent governance, best practices, and DevSecOps patterns across the organization.

What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities)

  • Design and implement secure cloud solutions aligned with rapid and secure development principles.

  • Build and evolve cloud infrastructure delivery strategies, including standards, processes, technologies, and tools.

  • Translate business needs into cloud solutions by understanding cloud use cases and making practical architectural recommendations.

  • Create automation and self-service capabilities for application development teams.

  • Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) modules and tooling using software engineering best practices.

  • Support cloud platforms through engineering, administration, troubleshooting, analysis, trending, and reporting.

  • Build and support cloud infrastructure for new applications and microservices as workloads shift to AWS/GCP.

  • Partner with development teams to evaluate requirements and recommend implementation, deployment, and provisioning approaches.

  • Develop enablement tools such as:

    • CI/CD pipelines

    • Container scheduling solutions

    • Custom engineering utilities and applications

  • Perform ongoing system reviews and recommend improvements to security, performance, cost, and operational maturity.

  • Stay current with commercial and open-source DevSecOps tools, architectures, and practices.

  • Coach and review the work of other engineers, contributing to team capability growth.

  • Collaborate in a team environment using practices like peer coding, design reviews, and code reviews.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong hands-on cloud engineering experience with AWS (primary); working knowledge of GCP (secondary).

  • Proven experience creating automated, repeatable solutions using PowerShell.

  • Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code and building reusable modules and patterns.

  • Solid understanding of and experience working within an SDLC using GitHub, including:

    • Branching strategies

    • Pull requests

    • Code reviews

    • CI/CD workflows

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver in a collaborative engineering environment (peer coding, architecture/design sessions, shared ownership).

Cloud Governance Expectations (AWS/GCP)

You should have demonstrated experience applying best practices for cloud governance, including:

AWS governance

  • Establishing and managing AWS Organizations

  • Implementing AWS Control Tower

  • Setting up and managing Budgets / cost controls

GCP governance

  • Establishing and managing Projects

  • Implementing Folders / hierarchy

  • Applying Policies

  • Setting up and managing Budgets / cost controls
