Senior Databricks Administrator
Location: Remote
Engagement Type: Contract
Contract Duration: 6 months
Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Databricks Administrator to own, operate, and continuously improve our Databricks environment. This role requires deep technical expertise, a proactive ownership mindset, and the ability to design secure, cost-efficient, and automated data platform operations in Azure. The ideal candidate will be comfortable acting as both a technical authority and a trusted partner to engineering, analytics, and leadership teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the administration, configuration, and ongoing optimization of Databricks workspaces
- Manage and optimize integrations with Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS) and related Azure services
- Develop and maintain automation workflows for cluster management, job orchestration, monitoring, and cost controls
- Implement and enforce security best practices, including identity access management, data access controls, and compliance requirements
- Monitor platform usage and lead FinOps initiatives, including cost optimization, spend forecasting, and usage transparency
- Support performance tuning, scalability, and reliability of Databricks workloads
- Create and maintain clear, thorough technical documentation, operational runbooks, and best-practice guidelines
- Collaborate closely with data engineers, data scientists, and cloud teams to support business objectives
- Proactively identify risks, inefficiencies, and improvement opportunities and drive solutions end-to-end
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of hands-on experience administering Databricks in enterprise environments
- Strong proficiency in Python for automation, scripting, and operational tooling
- Extensive experience with Azure Data Lake Storage and Azure cloud services
- Proven experience building automation flows (infrastructure automation, job scheduling, monitoring)
- Strong understanding of FinOps principles, including cost monitoring and optimization in cloud platforms
- Solid knowledge of security architecture, access controls, and governance in data platforms
- Demonstrated ability to produce clear, maintainable technical documentation
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently in a remote environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting large-scale or multi-workspace Databricks environments
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines for data platforms
- Experience working in regulated or security-sensitive environments
Ownership Mentality:
This role requires someone who treats the platform as their own, anticipates issues before they become problems, takes accountability from design through execution, and communicates clearly and proactively with stakeholders.
