Job Title: Data Engineer
Job Type: Contract to Hire (6 months until conversion)
Location: Remote (2 days a month required on-site in NYC)
Pay: $50-$60/hr

Overview

We are seeking a Data Engineer to join a fast-paced, business-facing data team supporting a variety of commercial functions. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working hands-on with data, building and optimizing SQL-based transformations, and partnering closely with stakeholders to deliver impactful insights.

You’ll work in a modern data stack environment and contribute to short-cycle, high-impact projects across areas such as marketing, revenue, loyalty, and HR.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and optimize SQL-based data transformations to support analytics and reporting
  • Develop and maintain data models to enable business intelligence and decision-making
  • Build and support data ingestion and ELT pipelines from various source systems
  • Analyze and debug existing queries and datasets to ensure data accuracy and performance
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into data solutions
  • Create and maintain clear documentation for data processes, models, and pipelines
  • Support ad hoc data requests and contribute to short-term, project-based initiatives
  • Participate in code reviews, testing, and quality assurance to maintain data integrity

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in a Data Engineer or SQL-heavy Data Analyst role
  • Strong proficiency in SQL (ability to write, read, and debug complex queries)
  • Experience working with data warehouses and business intelligence environments
  • Hands-on experience building or transforming datasets (not just querying existing tables)
  • Familiarity with data transformation tools such as DBT or similar frameworks
  • Basic experience with Python (e.g., Pandas for data manipulation)
  • Experience with version control tools such as Git

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Snowflake or similar cloud data warehouses
  • Familiarity with data orchestration tools such as Airflow or Azure Data Factory
  • Understanding of data modeling best practices (e.g., dimensional modeling)
  • Experience working in fast-paced, project-based environments
  • Exposure to cloud data platform migrations or modern data stack implementations

What You’ll Bring

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently with minimal oversight
  • Comfort working on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • A proactive mindset with a focus on data quality, documentation, and continuous improvement
