Summer Work Trends: What IT Professionals Are Saying About Productivity, PTO & Career Moves
Summer brings a different rhythm to the workplace. Some teams slow down, some keep momentum and many professionals find themselves balancing deadlines, time off and career goals.
Throughout June, we asked our LinkedIn community how summer impacts productivity, PTO, hiring decisions and workplace flexibility. The responses offered a look into how IT professionals are approaching the season.
Summer Productivity Looks Different for Everyone
When asked whether productivity dips during the summer months, most professionals said they stay consistent.
Nearly half of respondents said they maintain their productivity throughout the summer, while others noted smaller shifts:
- 49% said they stay consistent
- 29% said productivity dips a little, but they manage
- 14% said they are more productive with fewer meetings
- 8% said their productivity noticeably declines
According to the results, summer doesn’t necessarily mean a drop in performance. For many teams, the season may simply bring different working patterns, from adjusted schedules to fewer meetings and more focused work time. Maintaining productivity often comes down to having clear priorities, strong communication and the flexibility to support different working styles.
PTO Is Valuable, But Not Always Easy to Take
Time away from work is important, but many professionals still face challenges when stepping away.
When asked what prevents them from taking PTO during the summer, responses showed that workload and team structure remain common barriers.
- 34% said they are fully unplugged and have no concerns
- 27% said lack of coverage or a small team makes it difficult
- 22% said they have too much on their plate
- 17% said they worry about falling behind
While some professionals are able to fully disconnect, others continue to feel the pressure of staying available. For technology teams managing ongoing projects, having the right resources in place can make a major difference in preventing burnout and keeping workloads balanced.
Summer Hiring: Slow Season or Opportunity?
There’s often debate around whether summer is the right time to search for a new IT role. Our community had a variety of perspectives.
The majority said it depends on the company, while others see summer as a chance to make a move.
- 45% said it depends on the company
- 29% said hiring decisions tend to slow down
- 17% said summer can mean less competition
- 9% said they have never tried a summer job search
The responses show there isn’t one universal hiring pattern during the summer. Some organizations may slow down while others continue actively building their teams. For job seekers, summer can still be a valuable time to explore opportunities, especially as companies prepare for second-half priorities and upcoming initiatives.
Flexible Summer Schedules Are Still a Work in Progress
Summer flexibility continues to be a topic many professionals care about.
When asked about flexible summer schedules, most respondents said they don’t currently have access to them.
- 66% said they don’t have a flexible summer schedule but wish they did
- 18% said they have one and use it
- 12% said they don’t have one and are fine with that
- 4% said their company offers one, but the culture doesn’t encourage using it
The responses point to a larger conversation around workplace flexibility. Offering a perk is only part of the equation. Creating a culture where employees feel comfortable using that flexibility matters just as much.
As companies continue competing for top technology talent, benefits like flexible schedules can play a role in attracting and retaining skilled professionals.
Takeaway
From productivity habits to PTO challenges and hiring trends, this month’s poll responses highlight how much the employee experience continues to evolve.
Summer may change the pace of work, but it doesn’t change the need for strong teams, clear communication and workplaces built around flexibility. Whether companies are hiring, supporting existing employees or planning for future growth, understanding what professionals value helps create stronger technology teams.
