A Leadership Spotlight on Gravity’s Nashville Market Leader

A successful career in staffing is built one relationship at a time. For Jeff Fowler, Director of Business Operations for Gravity’s Nashville market, that has meant building a network from scratch, staying visible in the community and never losing sight of the people behind every deal.
Two and a half years after launching Gravity in Nashville by himself, Jeff has built a brand that people around town know by name, clients and competitors alike. It’s a story about starting over, staying true to himself and creating opportunities for the people and community
A Foundation Built on Trust
Jeff’s ties to Gravity go back decades, long before he officially joined the company. Rick Connolly, Gravity’s co-founder, was Jeff’s first boss in the professional world back in 1995. Jeff recruited for him for nearly a decade. He didn’t fully appreciate it at the time, but looking back, he considers Rick the best boss, mentor and leader he’s ever had.
The two stayed in touch over the years while Jeff built his career elsewhere, and Rick, along with co-founder Steve Dettor, grew Gravity into a company Jeff had been quietly watching and admiring from afar. When Gravity was ready to invest in a new market, Rick gave him an unusually open invitation. Talk to anyone in the company he wanted to, Rick told him, and hear the good, the bad and the ugly before making up his mind. Jeff had never experienced that kind of openness in an interview process before, and it was enough to convince him Gravity had no hidden agendas, just honest people building something real.
Starting From Zero in Nashville
Starting a market from scratch wasn’t new territory for Jeff. He had done it once before, spending roughly 15 years building an office in Boca Raton for a previous firm. But Nashville was a different animal. In a city where everyone in IT seems to know everyone else, Jeff quickly learned that word travels fast and reputation matters even more than usual.
Rather than see that as a problem, Jeff turned it into his mission from day one. He wasn’t going to be the person who didn’t know who the key players were or what was happening in the market. Gravity never held him back from spending time on lunches, happy hours, golf outings and networking events, and that relentless, hands-on approach turned a one-person startup into one of the most recognized names in Nashville’s IT staffing scene.
Leading With Authenticity, Not Just Metrics
When asked what defines Gravity’s culture, Jeff didn’t hesitate.
“If I had to boil it down to one word, it would be authenticity. Genuine caring, genuinely.”
He contrasts that with past employers who forgot there’s a real person behind every employee, someone with real challenges and a real life outside of work. At Gravity, he said, his one-on-ones with Rick and Steve spend more time on him as a person than on pipeline numbers, checking in on whether he has what he needs to succeed and how he’s really doing.
That doesn’t mean growth takes a back seat. Jeff points to Gravity’s aggressive expansion goals over the next eight to ten years but sees the two as inseparable. None of that growth happens without people who believe in the mission and are treated with dignity and respect, and he gives Gravity’s leadership credit for never getting so locked into metrics that they lose sight of the bigger picture.
The Power of Showing Up
One of the clearest examples of Jeff’s approach came at a golf tournament focused on data center innovation. Jeff calls himself a golf nut, so there was no way he was passing up the trip, and he came away with far more than a good round. He spent the week alongside engineers, financiers and infrastructure leaders wrestling with how the country will build, power and staff the growing wave of AI-driven data centers. Gravity was the only staffing company in the room, but the conversations about financing, power acquisition and everything else behind these projects gave Jeff a front row seat to where the industry is headed.
For Jeff, it reinforced why his role and Gravity’s role matter more than ever. The technology behind these data centers still depends on real people to build and deliver it, and Jeff believes recruiters and genuine relationships matter more than ever in a market flooded with noise and unqualified applicants. He points out that fewer than five percent of people who apply to jobs online ever hear back, which is exactly why a real relationship still beats a resume dropped into the void.
Bringing Nashville’s Leaders Together
Jeff’s focus on relationships extends well beyond individual conversations. As Nashville Regional Council Leader for the Executive Roundtable, he has built a forum that connects C-suite and VP-level leaders from across industries for candid, vendor-free conversation. Panelists and attendees consistently credit Jeff with creating a collaborative environment and pulling together an audience of leaders from across the city for real, forward-looking conversation.
The relationships built through the Roundtable are grassroots, formed across industries instead of within just one. For Jeff, events like these are another way to give back to the community, giving leaders a place to trade ideas and build connections that last well beyond the breakfast table.
What Keeps Him Going
When Jeff looks at what he’s built in Nashville, he doesn’t point to revenue first. He points to reputation. The brand he’s built is what he’s most proud of so far. Competitors now recognize his name at networking events and ask for his take on the market, not just to be polite, but because they actually value his insights.
In his own words, Jeff sums up what motivates him every day.
“Our mission to grow a company in order to make a positive impact on people’s lives internally and externally is the Why. If you are willing to work hard, do things the right way and treat everyone with dignity and respect, there is no ceiling for you here.”
The Importance of Staying Connected
Two and a half years into building Gravity’s Nashville market, Jeff Fowler’s approach remains simple. Invest in relationships. Show up consistently. Stay authentic. And when the opportunity is right, don’t hesitate to build something from nothing. He’s proud of what he’s built so far, and he’s excited to see where it goes from here.
