What Do Top IT Candidates Actually Want from Your Job Postings?
The world of IT staffing is shifting fast. Finding the right talent isn’t just about throwing a job description online and hoping for the best. It’s about understanding exactly what candidates are looking for and adjusting your strategy to meet them where they are.
To get a pulse on the current market, we ran a series of LinkedIn polls throughout March 2026. We asked our network about their job search habits, preferences and what makes them click “apply.” The response was massive. Across four polls we received thousands of votes and impressions.
Here is a breakdown of what we learned and how it impacts your hiring strategy.
Flexibility and Clear Expectations Drive Applications
We started by asking a simple question: What makes you click “apply” on a job posting?
The results show exactly where priorities lie today:
- Remote/Flexible Work Options: 45%
- Competitive Salary Range: 27%
- Clear Role Responsibilities: 23%
- Company Culture & Values: 5%
Remote work isn’t just a perk anymore. It is the deciding factor for nearly half of the talent pool. If your roles offer flexibility, put that information front and center.
Tech Stacks Catch the Eye First
You have a very short window to capture a candidate’s attention. When reviewing a job posting, what catches their eye first?
- Required skills & tech stack: 43%
- Benefits & Compensation: 25%
- Job title & Seniority level: 22%
- Growth opportunities: 10%
IT professionals want to know if they have the right experience for the job immediately. Keep your required skills clear, accurate and easy to scan.
Candidates Are Doing Their Homework
Are candidates blindly firing off resumes? Not exactly. We asked if they research the company and hiring manager before applying.
- Yes, always both: 56%
- Rarely, focus on the job: 25%
- Company only: 19%
- Hiring manager only: 0%
More than half of your applicants are looking into your company and the person they will report to before they even submit an application. Make sure your employer brand and leadership profiles are up to date and representing your organization well.
Visibility Varies
Finally, we looked at how candidates signal their availability using LinkedIn’s “Open To Work” feature.
- Yes, always: 61%
- No, prefer discreet search: 39%
While a majority use the feature, nearly 40% of candidates prefer a quiet job search. This highlights the importance of proactive recruiting. You can’t just rely on candidates who are visibly looking for work. You need to build relationships with passive talent.
The Bottom Line
The data is clear. Candidates want flexibility, upfront transparency about tech stacks and a solid understanding of who they are going to work for. Adjusting your job postings and recruiting strategies to align with these preferences will help you attract better talent and keep your digital transformation initiatives on track.
